Reality show looks for talent, 'inner spirit'

Some lucky performers will be able to channel their inner Troys and Gabriellas during High School Musical: Get in the Picture (ABC, July 20, 8 p.m. ET/PT).

Picture, hosted by Nick Lachey, wants them to embody the spirit of the movies, executive producer Jay Blumenfield says. "What we're looking for is somebody that's a great talent, singing and dancing, but also a great character," he says. "Just because you have a great voice doesn't mean you have that inner spirit or that heart."

Twelve finalists will be chosen to take part in a summer music program. The grand prize includes appearing in a music video during the closing credits of High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

"It's a competition … (but) this is a show about building people up, not tearing them down," Blumenfield says.

I just read an articl. e jessisca did on My tennessean.com where she said she was brought to tears and bawled on stage during a concert in Nicks hometown. she also said it hit slose to home because before she had always had her boyfriend/husband waiting for her backsage after her concert. i hope nick that you and jess find your way back together.There is something real there between you and jess. Nick Lachey hosts 'High School Musical: Get in the Picture'The rewards for winning ABC's upcoming "High School Musical" competition show just got a little sweeter.

The network has expanded the prize package for the winner of "High School Musical: Get in the Picture," a contest for aspiring actor-singer-dancers tied to Disney's massive "HSM" franchise. It premieres Sunday, July 20.

Previously, the show's prize was set as a role in a music video that will air over the closing credits of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," a theatrical release scheduled for the fall. The winner will still get that, but now there's more to the package.

The winner will also receive a contract to record two singles for Disney Records, including a version of the song from the music video, and be signed to a talent holding deal at ABC, meaning he or she could be cast in other shows at the network.

Nick Lachey will host "Get in the Picture," and a group of actors, directors and choreographers will lead contestants through a music camp to help determine the winner. A five-minute preview of the show will air during ABC's broadcast of the Jonas Brothers movie "Camp Rock" on Saturday (June 21).

Host Nick Lachey, who has his own experience with being a music phenomenon from his days in the boy band 98 Degrees, said the kids in "Get in the Picture" -- ages 16 to 22 -- are also chasing their dreams, which meshes with the ethos of "HSM."

"Those movies did a great job of capturing the spirit of being a teen-ager and of youthful joy. All these kids have that, even in the open auditions," Lachey said. Host Nick Lachey agrees: "These kids are at such an impressionable age, it takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there. I'm a big fan of trying to uplift those kids and inspire them."

The one-time 98 Degrees member says he wanted to play a more talented version of Ryan Seacrest since he could easily relate to the contestants. "I went to a performing arts school and I had gone through some of the experiences these kids are going through," says Lachey, who graduated from The Cincinnati (High) School for the Creative and Performing Arts. "I tried to take every opportunity to give them advice and guidance."

Lachey admits, however, he had his HSM homework cut out for him. "I hadn't seen the films,"he says. "But I watched them all, and to be honest, I enjoyed them a lot more than I thought I would. They did a great job of capturing the teen spirit."

Info about the album:

After his TV show debuts, Lachey will launch a media blitz for a new single, to be released at the end of July.

For now, he’s not saying much about the song (“it could be one of two”) or album (“it’s not yet titled”).

This we know: It includes Team Cincinnati, which Lachey led to victory on “Clash of the Choirs,” singing background on one song, as he had promised the singers in December.

They sing “Til The World Stands Still,” co-written by Lachey and arranged by Steve Zegree, the Western Michigan University jazz professor who arranged Team Cincinnati songs for the NBC show. The 20 singers and Zegree recorded the song here June 14 without Lachey.

The CD should be released in late September or early October, Lachey says. It is his first since “What’s Left Of Me,” released in 2006 after his split with Simpson

HERE'S AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE SHOW AND WHAT NICK HAS TO SAY:

“ ‘High School Musical’ has captured the spirit of that age,” Lachey said. “Don’t grow up so fast. Enjoy being a teenager. Enjoy being that age because you will never get it back. You don’t have to be into the performing arts to enjoy ‘High School Musical.’ The kids we have here who are competing, they look up to the Zac Efrons and Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdales of the world. On a performing level, these are idols.”

The contestants, ages 16 to 21, call Lachey “professor.”

“I wanted to act as a mentor and be a sounding board and support system to them as well,” Lachey said. “And, hopefully, I represent a success story.”

The show puts the contestants through different paces, such as singing along to the “HSM” score while walking through a department store. It’s a little silly, but sweet and blessedly free of humiliation, alliances and the nastier sides of humanity that often mark reality shows.

Lachey, who has been working on his skills since high school, says the encouraging atmosphere is critical for those trying to launch their careers.

“No humiliation, especially when you are dealing with young people; it’s important to have a positivity to it,” Lachey said. “Some are going to be better than others and some will grow more than others, and there will be a grand-prize winner, but they are all talented.”
